About Us
We have again enjoyed a very varied season in 2009 – 2010. We began with Wagner’s influence on Russian composers, researched by Anastasia Belina, and Gareth Curtis proved equally illuminating in his presentation about the lesser known songs of Richard Wagner. Our examination of particular operas has concentrated on Rheingold, where it all began, when Professor David Fallows examined the role of Fasolt and Vice President Joan Burns took us through the opera, illustrating the ongoing conflict between power and love that is the main theme of the Ring Cycle. Vice President Jeffrey Lawton, in conversation with Robin Hobbes, entertained us with anecdotes about his career as Tristan but also made serious points about the immense difficulties of singing long Wagner roles and the long training necessary for success. Simon Rees made fascinating comparisons between WNO’s new production of Die Meistersinger and the Welsh Eisteddfod tradition, and we end with a look back at Jon Vickers who dominated the roles of Tristan, Parsifal and Siegmund in the 1960s and 1970s.
