About Us
The topics covered in our meetings continue to be very varied. In 2008 – 2009 our speakers have involved us in Wagner’s orchestration and his leitmotifs, introduced us to the lesser known songs of Richard Wagner, considered his treatment of the ancient story of Tristan und Isolde with its themes of conflict between love and responsibility, and put Wagner in context with composers as diverse as Schumann and Tanayev. Andrew Shore took us on his journey from his Lancashire roots to singing Alberich at Bayreuth and Jeffrey Lawton both entertained and delighted us with a recording of the Ring Cycle he sang with Anne Evans at Covent Garden. The unforgettable climax to last season was the performance of Gotterdammerung at the Bridgewater Hall that left us spellbound and even more in thrall to Wagner than before. It is hoped that a CD of this will be released in the New Year.
Details of our current season can be found on the Events page. Non-members are welcome to join us at any of our meetings, to share our love of Wagner’s music dramas.
